What a great ride

The port macquarie weekend was a fantastic ride and it was great to see so many people turn up for the run. The run from port Macquarie up the oxley highway would have to be one of the greatest motorcycle roads on the planet. See you all at the next ride

OK, Below are the maps to go Up and Back respectively.

On the way up if we go via Gingers Creek the total run from Freemans to El Paso is 497km. If we only do Long Flat it is 392km, or if we skip the pub (Long Flat) it is 333km via only Wauchope.
Going up is suggested to be via Buchanan, Hinton, Paterson, East Gresford (79km), Dungog (103km), Stroud Rd (126km), Gloucester (166km), Wingham (234km), Taree (outskirts) (252km), Kew (bypassed now) (291km), Wauchope (via Broken Bago) (313km), Long Flat (342km), maybe Gingers Ck (394km), Pt Macquarie (El Paso Motor Inn) (497km).

Stop at East Gresford servo for a leg stretch / top up and Gloucester for morning tea at the biker friendly cafe (middle of main street on the left) and fuel up on Edit: arrival at the (Caltex?) servo on the left coming into town. Lunch SHOULD be at The Long Flat Pub, but we could have it at Wauchope or even detour to Kew if we have been delayed along the way for any reason. Whether any / all buzz up to Gingers Creek in the arvo will be entirely a matter decided over lunch by those present! Fuel is available at lots of places (including all listed) and there are no dirt roads involved.

We will be picking up a couple of bikes along the way (Ted & Pauline), most probably at Stroud Rd around 10:30am-ish I would think.

The return run via Oxley, Thunderbolts and Bucketts Way to home is 460km. ie. Gingers Creek (103km), Walcha (183km), Gloucester (333km), Charlestown (460km).

I have been asked a couple of q's about the route, this is from the club calendar (get the latest from http://hunterdog.org.au/Calendar/month.php): First day via Gloucester, Wingham and the back road in (ie via Wauchope) to the Long Flat Pub before heading in to Port Macquarie, which should see us in town by early arvo to get settled in at the El Paso Motel. Or some may wish to pop out to Gingers Creek in the arvo depending how we're feeling, the weather, whether or whatever! Sunday will be a return ride to wag our DOG tails on The Oxley and Thunderbolts Way, which should get us home by mid arvo. Meet 8:45am SATURDAY at Freemans Waterhole Oaks for 9am departure (unless rain prevents). This is the Shell servo on the left when coming from Toronto or Kurri, or right from Sydney. (Day trippers welcome, turn back whenever)

I will publish a proper route map probably tomorrow, but a quick calc on the gps software says it is about 340km to Long Flat (assuming we go to Glocester via Dungog), then 50km back to Port Macquarie (+ 100km if popping up to Gingers Creek first).

Hi Alll ... regarding booking accommodation for Port Macquarie Weekend:  just been notified by motel management that the bargain rate of $89 is available only for booking online... see link / page below... or if you prefer not to book online, they will take phone bookings with a Credit Card number quoted over teh phone....  the saving is substantial as a standard room is generally $125... (quoted)... so when booking, do it online .. or over the phone... of course the catch is no cancellations/refunds for no-shows.

cheers

The votes have been cast ... and the winner is the Port Macquarie weekend?

Hunter Dogs Oxley Wag-It Weekend Away
Saturday 20th (Sat night @ Port Macquarie)
& Sunday 21st Nov ?10 (Home via Oxley & Thunderbolt?s).

Ride will leave 9am, Saturday 20th November from Freeman?s Waterhole (usual meet point) and head out for a fancy smacey tricky windy way to Port Macquarie, arriving mid-afternoon.

Then for the never-say-tire thrill seekers - drop your bags and there will be an afternoon ride out to the Long Flat Hotel and/or Gingers Creek up the Oxley hill.

Home again for a hearty dinner out somewhere (walking distance!) then off Sunday morning after breakfast for another crack at the Oxley? this time right to the top and home from Walcha via Thunderbolt?s.

If you are interested in this weekend away, here?s what to do:

1.   Let us know if you?re coming? either by text, email, website or carrier pigeon.. just so we know to wait for you at the departure point.
2.   Make your own accommodation booking / arrangements:  (see below)

The ? El Paso Motor Inn:  29 Clarence Street, Port Macquarie
... has come well recommended from DOG Rob

-   there is undercover basement off-street parking for the bikes &
-    it?s an easy walk to towns, shops, restaurants & the hotels along a lovely river walk.
-   You can get the No Frills - PORT ROOM SPECIAL for $89.00 Room only with 26 inch TV/ five free-to-air channels and eight Austar channels; complimentary tea and coffee, but does not include breakfast.
-   If you want to share rooms include (generally) one double and one single
-   There are other room options available if these suit you better, you can check them all out on  http://www.elpasomotorinn.com.au

FREECALL 1800 027 965 / Tel (02) 6583 1944  & make your arrangements..

We?ll decide dinner arrangements on the day, but the motel is an easy walk to many good choices.

That?s it.. it?s that simple.
1.    Let us know if you are coming.
2.   Make your accommodation booking
3.   Turn up ready for 9am, Saturday 20th November from Freeman?s Waterhole

Depending on the distances and the amount of beer available in the evenings, I might be interested.  Don't have any bikes registered on the road at present, and don't fancy hauling a tent, BUT, if others require transportation of caming equipment I might go along in the van as a kind of "back up" crew and enjoy the social events in the evenings.

I just did the Oxley last Sunday, Monday and Tuesday in the van just to see the country side and get out for a bit.  Ellenbourough and Aspley falls were awesome,  there was a small amount of roadworks on the Oxley but nothing significant.

Comments?

Ok ALL, we are due to  head out onto the open road again for our bi-annual trip away... Date now set in rubbery concrete is weekend of 20-21 November.

There are now 2 big ideas on the cards:

1.   The Bombala Motorcycle show is on in Nov (http://www.bombalabikeshow.com.au/index.htm) and a three dayer;  suggested we would spend the Fri night at somewhere like Bermagui so it's a short ride in to check out the show and listen to the band and retreat to a tent (noting that according to Frances? investigations, all hotel/motel accommodation is currently booked out or requires a minimum 2 night stay? but that in itself is possible if we hurry and book NOW!! Otherwise it is  byo tent & sleeping bag!
Either ride home on Sunday or take Monday off too depending how it is all going! It would be possible to leave Fri night and knock off the first 200km and stay in a place like the Grandview Hotel in Wentworth Falls (well worth a stop!) and then run the remaining 500km to Bombala on the Saturday.

or:
2.   Oxley Wag-It Weekend Away with the Sat night at Port Macquarie.   Due to my apparent inability to navigate around this website I am unable to tell you where that will ride, but it?s basically the back way to Port Macquarie and a tidy ride home on the Sunday.   We would probably aim for staying in the one central place, which can be anywhere that we as a group of attendees decide? maybe the foreshore caravan / cabin park? maybe a motel of liking.

If you are interested in this weekend away, can you contact soon so I can/will make some arrangements? which I won?t do if no-one is interested.
Email, phone or web response is just fine.

THANKS
FRANCES

Just putting this up to encourage discussion and get an idea of how many people are interested in doing this, or if maybe we should change any part of it?

The Bombala Motorcycle show is on in Nov (http://www.bombalabikeshow.com.au/index.htm) and all reports I have heard are that this is a really good event to go to, however I have never personally been. It is really a three dayer as we would spend the Fri night at somewhere like Bermagui so it's a short ride in to check out the show and listen to the band and retreat to a tent, it is fully catered but byo tent & sleeping bag!

We are also talking about an Oxley Wag-It Weekend Away for 19-20 March 2011, with the Sat night at Port Macquarie.

So do save both these dates and tell anyone else you have important motorcycling business to attend to that weekend! Also let us know if you're coming either via a post here or contact us via http://www.hunterdog.org.au/AboutUs.htm.
